More About Corwen
Corwen is one of the oldest towns in Wales. Situated in Denbighshire, this picturesque town has a rich history and is a gateway to the surrounding countryside. Despite its rural nature, Corwen is a hotbed of modern business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship, and investment activities. In addition, the town has a plentiful living and working population which has turned the area into one of the most vibrant communities in the country.
The name Corwen is derived from the Welsh words 'Cor' (fort) and 'Gwan' (white), together meaning 'White fort'. The area has been occupied since the late Iron Age, when hill forts were constructed to hold off the invading Romans. Its location at the intersection of two rivers made it a natural hub of commerce and a crossroads of ancient trading routes.
By 1200 AD Corwen had developed into a small market town, trading in wool and livestock with its wealthy merchants exporting to other parts of Europe. It continued to grow throughout the Middle Ages with the establishment of a Benedictine priory in 1221 and the founding of a college of higher education in 1734.
'Caradog Freichfras', a Welsh leader from the 6th century, had a great influence on the town's development. He was renowned for his purification of the Church and the use of the Welsh language by educated people for Civil and Ecclesiastical purposes. This fueled a passion for the preservation of Welsh culture and identity which is still apparent today, with more than two-thirds of Corwen's population speaking Welsh as a first language.
Modern Day Business Scene:
Corwen's rural setting has allowed the town to benefit from new business opportunities while still retaining its traditional charm. In recent years, there has been a surge in entrepreneurial activity, with a number of start-ups establishing their roots in town.
Corwen's technology sector is particularly well-developed. The town boasts a range of IT companies servicing a wide range of sectors and industries, including software and health. There is also an impressive level of investment in creative industries, with a couple of television production companies based in the town.
Whilst growth in retail has been slower in Corwen, there are several examples of innovative and successful businesses operating in the town, from local stores to high-end urban fashion outlets. Corwen is also home to a number of independent craft businesses, selling handmade products, including furniture, jewellery, pottery and woodworking.
It is also the site of one of the largest industrial parks in the region, employing around 700 people and catering to a range of industries from automotive manufacturers to pharmaceutical firms.
The Corwen area has a total population of around 9,000 inhabitants. Of these, 97% are English-speaking, with the remaining 3% speaking Welsh. The population is predominantly in the 20-49 age bracket, accounting for 54% of the total population.
The town's labour force is evenly split between those employed in professional and technical occupations, and those employed in service occupations. Overall, around 71% of the population are in work, with the unemployment rate in the area standing at just 2.5%.
Corwen has a rich cultural heritage and a thriving business environment, making it the perfect place for entrepreneurs, investors, and businesses looking for a unique home or site for their activities. Despite its rural location, Corwen is well-connected to the rest of the UK, with strong road and rail links allowing easy access to major cities and airports. With a population of motivated professionals and entrepreneurs and a wide range of business opportunities, Corwen is a great choice for those looking to invest or start a new business venture.
