More About Chinnor

Introduction

Chinnor is a village and civil parish in Oxfordshire, located in England on the edge of the Chiltern Hills and about eleven miles south of Oxford. The village has a long history and continues to have strong ties to local business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship and investment. It has a notable resident population of around 4,900, largely within its eight civil parishes and is home to a diverse range of businesses and activities both locally and further afield.

History

The village of Chinnor was first recorded in 904 AD in the Doomsday Book and its name is likely derived from the Old English phrase 'Cyning's horn' meaning 'King's corner'. In the 1100s, Chinnor and its surrounding area experienced substantial growth as a typical agricultural market town. For example, Chinnor once had a successful sheep market as well as a tannery from which leather goods such as saddles, boots and coats were produced.

In more recent years, the village and local area have remained strongly connected to business and commerce. In the 1967, the Industrial and Commercial Development Act was passed and the local area tech industries and business. This led to a local investment boom, much of which is still visible today.

Demographics

Chinnor is home to approximately 4,900 people. The population is quite evenly distributed between all age groups, with 18.5% aged 0-15, 62.3% aged 16-65, and 19.2% aged 65 and over. These statistics are just above the national average and Chinnor enjoys a reputation as a vibrant and diverse community.

Although Chinnor is largely residential, the local economy consists primarily of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). These businesses range from manufacturing and engineering, to retail and specialist services, among others.

Business, Technology, Design, Commerce, Entrepreneurship and Investment

Business

Chinnor is home to a wide variety of businesses. Much of this is in the manufacturing and engineering sector which is traditional in the area. These companies include manufacturers of industrial parts, light engineering and other precision equipment, as well as small-scale manufacturing firms such as glass, ceramics and metal case makers.

The local area also hosts a number of retail businesses, largely centred around the village centre and acorss the road from the nearby railway station. This includes convenience, clothing and hospitality stores. The area also has some specialist retail, such as traditional tea and cake merchants, florists and antiques dealers.

Technology

Chinnor is increasingly becoming a centre for tech-based industries. This includes computer hardware, software and IT services companies, as well as start-ups and more traditional companies. This is due to Chinnor's proximity to both Oxford and London, as well as its easily accessible transport links to both.

Chinnor is also home to a number of online companies, such as online marketing businesses and software design companies. Many of these start-ups have chosen to stay local as they benefit from Chinnor's relative low cost of living and skilled workforce.

Design

In addition to its tech companies, Chinnor is also home to a number of creative industries. The area is home to a design studio and several design agencies which focus on creating engaging and modern designs for products, websites and printed materials.

The area is also home to some specialist lithographers, who are currently responsible for producing commemorative coins and other collectible items from the nearby RAF Benson Air Force base.

Commerce

Chinnor ishome to a range of businesses, including a number of accountancy firms, solicitors and financial advisors. This is due largely to Chinnor's close proximity to Oxford, as well as the lower cost of living for those living in outlying villages.

The area is also home to specialist trade and merchants, ranging from household goods and electronics to professional services such as personal trainers and gardeners.

Entrepreneurship and Investment

The local area has taken a keen interest in entrepreneurship and start-ups in recent years. There are several meetups organised by local entrepreneurs, including 'Startup Chinnor' which was founded in 2020 and has seen a surge in growth in recent months.

Chinnor also benefits from local investment, both from the village council and from external investors. This includes both public and private investment and is largely directed towards developing local businesses, particularly tech based start-ups, with some sources of funding allocated for research and development projects.

Conclusion

Chinnor is a thriving village located in Oxfordshire, England and home to a vibrant and diverse community. It has a long history and today it is still a hub of business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship and investment. Although Chinnor is largely residential in nature, it has a large number of small and medium-sized businesses located in the area, as well as a range of tech based industries and design companies. Chinnor also boasts a wide range of specialist trade and merchants and a great deal of both public and private investment that has been put into developing local businesses. All these factors combined demonstrate that Chinnor is an excellent place for business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship and investment.
