More About Woolwich

Introduction

Woolwich is an area of London in the United Kingdom, located in the southernmost part of the city, in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. It is bounded by the River Thames to the south and has long been a major port and commercial hub of the capital. Historically, Woolwich has played an important role in London's economic and cultural life, as it has been at the forefront of technological advances, business expansion and urban renewal.

Today, Woolwich is home to a large community of people from all around the world. It has had its fair share of changes in the last few years, but remains a vibrant, energetic and diverse area of London, full of businesses and entrepreneurs hoping to make a success of themselves.

The History of Woolwich

Woolwich has a long and illustrious history that dates back to Roman times. It was first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, when it was known as Uluenei. This meant 'the pleasant town' in Anglo-Saxon and it was probably one of the first places in this area of London to be settled.

Woolwich expanded significantly during medieval times and by the early 1500s the royal dockyards were established. This attracted many people to the area and meant it was a hub of industry and commerce. During the Napoleonic Wars, the largest gunpowder factories in Europe were built at Woolwich, making it a major strategic area for the British Empire.

In the 19th century, Woolwich grew rapidly and became a major port and manufacturing centre. During this period, the area was at the forefront of innovations in shipbuilding, engineering and technology. Notable landmarks such as Coleshill Estate, Woolwich Ferriston Exchange and The Town Hall were built during this era and the first regular railway line arrived in 1839.

The 20th century saw further expansion as Woolwich became an outer London suburb, before the borough merged with Greenwich in 1965. The area continued to experience economic and population growth, as well as advances in technology, with the Royal Artillery Barracks becoming the site of the Royal Artillery Museum in 1926.

Demographics

The 2021 census showed that there are 54,295 people in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, a population that has grown from 44,861 in 2010, albeit with only a 0.2% growth in the last decade. The predominant ethnic group in the borough is White British, followed by Black British, Asians (Bangladeshi and Other Asian), Other White, Mixed and Asian (Indian). The main language spoken by residents is English (86.9%), followed by Polish (2.8%) and other languages, including French, Romanian and Spanish (all under 2%).

The median age of people living in the borough is 34 years and the vast majority (62%) are in employment. Additionally, most residents own their own homes or rent from the private sector. Although Woolwich has seen significant growth in terms of population and diversity in the last decade, it remains an area with relatively lower levels of education, employment and income compared to the rest of the capital.

Business and Entrepreneurship

Over the last decade, Woolwich has undergone significant business growth and changes, becoming an increasingly attractive area for entrepreneurs, start-ups and investors. The area has experienced huge renovation and regeneration, with new office complexes, business parks and retail developments being built.

Woolwich is home to several large international and national companies, such as KPMG, Johnson Matthey and Rolls-Royce, as well as locals who have set up shop in the area, such as the coffee roaster La Colombe Parisoise and The General WolfePub.

The area has benefitted from a number of incentives and funding schemes, such as Woolwich Works, which are designed to help boost business growth and employment opportunities. The scheme provides free training and advice to start-ups and small businesses, along with grants and mentoring. Additionally, a Pop-up scheme has been launched to help promote local businesses and entrepreneurs, alongside other initiatives such as the Woolwich Town Centre Strategy to help promote business in the area.

The area is also home to independent entrepreneurs and start-ups, particularly in the fields of technology, online businesses and e-commerce. Woolwich is home to the Royal Artillery Barracks, which has become a hub for tech companies and entrepreneurs. It is also home to the Woolwich Creative District, an initiative to create a space for artists, makers and entrepreneurs to work, collaborate and exhibit their work.

Technology and Design

Woolwich is a major hub for technological advances and design. This is due to its proximity to the city centre, but also because it is home to the Royal Artillery Barracks, which hosts the 10th Regiment Royal Artillery. This regiment has a considerable share of the most cutting-edge technology, such as a drone unit, as well as a design and research lab.

The area is also home to a number of tech-related businesses, such as Inmarsat, NXP Semiconductors, Veolia and Panasonic, as well as the Royal Borough of Greenwich Digital Innovation Hub. This is a hub for digital collaboration, providing access to the latest technology, tools and resources for businesses and entrepreneurs.

The Creative District also plays a part here, with a strong focus on design and technology. The district hosts many events, activities and initiatives to bring together designers, technologists and entrepreneurs to share ideas and create innovations.

Commerce and Investment

Woolwich is a major commercial hub in London and is a popular area for investors and entrepreneurs. The area has seen a flurry of retail developments and expansion, particularly along Woolwich High Street, where the likes of Primark, Starbucks and Subway have opened branches.

The area is also home to several office parks, with a high concentration of financial services, IT, communications and marketing companies, such as British American Tobacco, Jefferies and HSBC. Additionally, there are a number of small-scale businesses and independent retailers, as well as a range of cafes, restaurants and pubs, making Woolwich a destination for local visitors as well as visitors from outside the area.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Woolwich is an area of London that has seen significant changes and growth over the last few decades. It is a major commercial and industrial centre, as well as a hub for entrepreneurs, start-ups, technologists, designers and investors. Despite its difficulties, Woolwich has maintained its vibrancy and diversity and remains a unique, energetic and exciting area of the capital.
