More About Stockport

Introduction

Stockport is an exciting town located within the greater metropolitan area of Greater Manchester in the United Kingdom. The town has gone through many changes throughout its long and storied history, particularly since the industrial revolution. During the latter part of the 20th century and beyond, Stockport transformed into the thriving business, technology, design and commerce hub it is today. This transformation has been fuelled by a combination of investment and entrepreneurial spirit that has seen the town become a leader in the UK for both business opportunity and culture.

This article will explore the various connections to business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship and investment in Stockport, exploring how the town has grown from an industrial past into a vibrant hub for innovation and prosperity. We will cover the demographics of Stockport and how these highlight the town's success in these areas as well as other key areas that have been pivotal to Stockport's growth over the years.

History of Stockport

Originally inhabited by the Celts, the area that is now Stockport dates back to the pre-Roman period. The town's name is derived from the Anglo-Saxon word 'Stokeport' which roughly translates to 'Market at the Stoppage/Stoke'. The town as we know it was established in the 12th century when a market charter was granted by the Earl of Chester. That same century Stockport was elevated to a parish, and by the mid-13th century Stockport had become the county town of Cheshire.

From the Medieval era up until the 17th century, Stockport continued to grow and prosper. This was largely due to its convenient location between Manchester and Liverpool, with the Mersey and Irwell rivers acting as useful transport links. After the 17th century, however, Stockport's economy began to suffer as the great trading cities of Manchester and Liverpool took hold of the local economy and Stockport was by-passed.

This changed in 1765 when the world's first mechanically operated cotton-spinning mill opened and began to revitalise the struggling town. This was followed by the arrival of the railway in 1840 - and over the next 100 years, Stockport underwent a huge transformation. It slowly developed into a town of entrepreneurs and industrialists who, due to the improved transport links, were able to take advantage of the globalisation of the Victorian era. This transformation created an array of industries and employers that are still a major part of the Stockport economy today.

Demographics

Stockport is located within the metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester and has a population of 136,082 individuals according to the 2011 census. The majority of the town's population is of white British ethnicity, accounting for 81.5%, making Stockport one of the most homogenous towns in the UK. Other significant ethnicities include Asian, mixed and black British backgrounds, accounting for 8.4%, 8.7% and 1.3% respectively.

After English, the most commonly spoken language in Stockport is Punjabi, which is spoken by 2.3% of the population, followed by Urdu (1.7%) and Slovak (1.7%).
