Macclesfield - Macclesfield is a market town and civil parish in Cheshire, England. The town lies on the River Bollin, in the east of the county on the edge of the Cheshire Plain, with Macclesfield Forest to its east. It is around 16 miles 26 km south of Manchester city centre and 38 miles 61 km to the east of Chester.%0ABefore the Norman Conquest, Macclesfield was held by Edwin, Earl of Mercia and was assessed at £8. The manor is recorded in the Domesday Book as Maclesfeld , meaning Maccel s open country . The medieval town grew up on the hilltop around what is now St Michael s Church. It was granted a charter by Edward I in 1261, before he became king. Macclesfield Grammar School was founded in 1502. The town had a silk-button industry from at least the middle of the 17th century, and became a major silk-manufacturing centre from the mid-18th century. The Macclesfield Canal was constructed in 1826%E2%80%9331.

Macclesfield Town F.C. - Macclesfield Town Football Club was a professional association football club in Macclesfield, Cheshire, England, which was due to compete in the National League, the 5th tier of English football, in the 2020%E2%80%9321 season but was wound-up in the High Court on 16 September 2020. The club was formed in 1874 and since 1891 played home games at Moss Rose.%0AInitially known as Macclesfield F.C., the club competed in the short-lived Combination league in the 1890%E2%80%9391 season, reforming in the Manchester League at the end of the century. The locality, which was named after Macclesfield in England, was briefly the scene of mining activities after gold was discovered in Macclesfield Creek in 1865. The Post Office opened on 9 September 1891 and closed in 1974.The town is known for its rich soil used for growing flowers and potatoes, and its abundance of uncommon farm animals, such as goats and alpacas. Earl of Macclesfield - Earl of Macclesfield is a title that has been created twice. The first creation came in the Peerage of England in 1679 in favour of the soldier and politician Charles Gerard, 1st Baron Gerard. He had already been created Baron Gerard, of Brandon in the County of Suffolk, in 1645, and was made Viscount Brandon, of Brandon in the County of Suffolk, at the same time as he was given the earldom. These titles are also in the Peerage of England. Lord Macclesfield was the great-grandson of the distinguished judge Sir Gilbert Gerard, Master of the Rolls from 1581 to 1594. He was succeeded by his eldest son, the second Earl. He was involved in the Rye House Plot of 1683, was sentenced to death but later pardoned by the King. On his death without legitimate issue in 1701 the titles passed to his younger brother, the third Earl. He had earlier represented Yarmouth, Lancaster and Lancashire in the House of Commons. When he died in 1702 the titles became extinct.
