Introduction
Surrounded by the sparkling Mediterranean Sea and bathed in the sun of its warm climate, Spain is a dream destination for many tourists. But, in these modern times Spain is much more than its stunning landscapes, vibrant culture and delicious gastronomy. Following decades of investment, reforms and commitment to the modernisation of its infrastructure and economy, Spain is increasingly viewed as a diverse hub of business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship and investments. Spanning across the country, these elements make it an attractive market for international companies and investors from numerous industries, as well as represent a strong opportunity for aspiring entrepreneurs.
Location and Geographical Setting
Located in the south west corner of Europe, Spain is bordered to the west by Portugal and to the east by France, Andorra and the Mediterranean Sea. Its size of 505,992 square kilometres (195,364 square miles), makes it the second largest country in the European Union and its population of almost 47 million makes it the fourth most populous. It is also the only European country to have a coast on both the Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea.
The country can be subdivided into several regions, including Castile and León, Catalonia, Galicia, Valencian Community, Madrid, Navarre, Andalusia, the Canary Islands, the Basque Country and the Balearic Islands. Its topography is extremely varied; the mainland is composed of the Meseta plateau, the Pyrenees mountain range and the coastlands, while its islands are mainly volcanic in nature, with the Balearic Islands being formed mainly by limestone.
Demographics
According to the 2017 National Institute of Statistics of Spain, the total recorded population residing in the country was 46,756,782. 90.2% of the population was Spanish nationals, with the remaining 9.7% being composed mostly of foreign-born individuals, including those from Romania, Morocco and United Kingdom. Among the Spanish nationals, 16.5% were born outside of the country.
Its capital, as well as the most populated city, is Madrid, home to more than 3.2 million people. Other important cities include Barcelona (1.6 million people), Valencia (777,000), and Seville (696,000).
Though claiming a population of almost 47 million, the CIA's World Factbook listed an estimated work force of 1.002.944 employed individuals in 2019. Of this total, employment in industry accounts for 29.7%, services accounts for 65.7%, and agriculture 5.3%.
Economy
Most of Spain's economic activity is concentrated in its two leading cities Madrid and Barcelona, which account for almost 30% of the gross domestic product (GDP). The rest of the country is divided between services and industry. The service sector consists primarily of finance, communications, tourism and construction, while industry covers the production of chemicals, textiles, food, beverages and metal products.
Spain is a member of the Eurozone, using the euro as its currency, and the European Union, which means that it is entitled to receive various forms of aid from both institutions.
Spain benefits from an open economy and a large international trade market, with exports and imports accounting for 35.3% and 39.9% of its national GDP, respectively. In 2019, its largest export partners were France, Germany, Italy and Portugal.
Business, Technology, Design, Commerce, Entrepreneurship and Investments
With the advances of technology and the modernisation of its economy, Spain is an important hub of business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship and investments.
Business
The reforms implemented throughout the country's economic history have reshaped its corporate landscape and resulted in the creation of a robust legal and administrative infrastructure, which has sustained the growth of a large number of businesses. Some of the largest companies in the country are Telefonica, Santander, Iberdrola, Endesa and Repsol, which operate in the fields of telecommunications, banking and financial services, energy, and oil and gas, respectively.
Technology
As a result of the reforms and its development in the past two decades, Spain is becoming a formidable presence in Europe's technology industry. The country has made a commitment to digitalisation, so it has become a major hub for startups and tech companies, including some of the world's largest tech giants. Companies such as Google and IBM have established a presence in the country and have invested in local startups.
Design
Spanish culture is renowned for its unique style, and this includes the country's commitment to design. From retail and architecture to fashion and graphic design, Spain's design industry has been undergoing a significant transformation in recent years, as more and more companies have established a presence in the country. Companies such as G-Star, Diesel and Chanel are some of the biggest names investing in Spanish design. Additionally, the country has a vibrant design education sector which offers courses in industrial design and architecture among others.
Commerce
Thanks to its privileged location, Spain has been able to play an important role in international commerce. Despite the country's entrance into the Eurozone, it has kept its tariffs low, providing a favorable atmosphere for international trade. Spain is both an importer and exporter, with a focus on the EU, Latin America and the US.
Entrepreneurship
In recent years, the entrepreneurial spirit has taken hold of Spain and the country has become a major European hub for startups. This is thanks in part to its commitment to reforming its economy and its active pursuit of international markets. The Spanish government offers numerous incentives and programs to encourage entrepreneurship, and business accelerators such as Wayra, Impact Hub, Telefonica Open Future and La Salle Technova, have all made a commitment to helping local entrepreneurs launch their businesses.
Investment
Due to its strong economy, Spain is becoming an attractive destination for foreign investors. Spain offers investors a wide range of investment opportunities, from private equity and venture capital funds to real estate, energy and infrastructure projects.
Conclusion
Spain is a country with a strong commitment to modernisation and economic growth. This commitment has resulted in the country becoming a unique hub for business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship and investments. This, combined with its attractive climate, stunning geography, vibrant culture and central location, have all made Spain an increasingly attractive destination for companies, entrepreneurs, and investors from around the world.
