More About Newhaven

Introduction:

Newhaven, a busy port and ferry town situated at the mouth of the River Ouse in East Sussex, England, has long had a connection to the sea, business, trade and investment. Understanding the history of this bustling port gives insight into the area's strong connections to technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship and investment and the ways it has been shaped over the centuries by the resolve of its citizens.

Historic Background:

Newhaven first began as an Anglo-Saxon settlement close to the site of a natural harbor known to the Romans as Meeching. In the 11th century, Newhaven flourished as a fishing village and seaport, capitalizing upon its advantageous position along the river and its access to the sea. By 1230, the port of Newhaven was officially part of the Cinque Ports Confederation, and began to act as a significant trading hub between England and the continent. This continued for centuries and Newhaven firmly established itself as an important port for exports, imports and passenger transport.

By the late 18th century, Newhaven had further developed its infrastructure and was the port of choice for many leading traders and merchants. It was the hub for traffic to and from the continent, the focus for a number of shipbuilding and engineering companies, as well as being an important passenger port for hundreds of people making their way to and from the continent. In 1811, William Strutt's steam packet service established its first regular passenger service from London to Dieppe, France, and Newhaven quickly grew in its importance as a staging post for the service.

The Industrial Revolution and the increased mechanization of the 19th century saw Newhaven make progress and integrate into its evolving world. Two railway lines were opened up, the first in 1847, followed by a second in 1883, each connecting Newhaven to the capital, London. These new lines opened up access to the larger ports upriver, as well as enabling increased trade and commerce by providing an effective means of transporting goods in and out of the town.

Modern Times:

Newhaven continues to be an important port and gateway to Europe, not only as a port for passenger transport, but also for freight and freight services, with the great majority of the town's economic activity coming from the surrounding ports and businesses.

Despite its smaller size and quieter atmosphere today, Newhaven remains a thriving business centre and is of increasing importance due to its vast stretch of quaysides and deepwater harbour, making it an ideal port for large vessels such as cruise liners and ships from other continents.

With its bustling docks, various storage and warehousing facilities, and wide range of services, Newhaven has great potential for both business and investment. Its advantageous location makes it an ideal site for businesses within the service sector, particularly those relying on imports and exports.

Newhaven also benefits from the support of a number of government initiatives, to drive forward enterprise and entrepreneurship. For example, the Newhaven Economic Development and Investment (NEDI) programme, set up by East Sussex County Council, and operated by the Newhaven Enterprise & Regeneration Trust, is specifically designed to help encourage and nurture new businesses.

Further to this, the new Newhaven Business Park, established in 2012 and set in 12 acres of landscaped grounds, provides prime office space for local businesses and entrepreneurs looking to start or grow their business in the Newhaven area.

Wealth & Demographics:

Newhaven has a population of approximately 19,700, according to the most recently available census figures, with the majority of these being young people aged between 18 and 24. With an uprising of businesses, investment in the area has increased and the number of people employed, self-employed or running their own businesses has grown in recent years.

The wealth of the local area is mainly derived from the port and its ancillary businesses, as well as catering, manufacturing, transport and other services. The wider catchment area of Newhaven is estimated to be worth £1.3 billion in GVA per annum, with the average weekly wages estimated at £313.

The local population is a mix of vibrant nationalities including British, European, Asian and African. The area is also popular with French commuters due to the regular passenger and freight services from Newhaven to Dieppe and beyond.

Business & Investment:

Newhaven is home to a number of businesses and industries, providing employment for the local population, as well as those commuting in from abroad. These include the port-related businesses associated with the ferry and cruise terminal, as well as various engineering and warehousing businesses.

With its strategic position along the south east coast of England, Newhaven is an ideal area for investment. It offers access to the sea and central-London markets with excellent transport links, a large number of well-regarded schools and universities, a thriving cultural scene and a number of leisure activities.

The proximity of the international airport at Gatwick and the excellent transport links to London make this area attractive to business and executive commuters, as well as those looking to invest in property. The train services to the centre of London are frequent and reliable and the Eurostar services to Paris and beyond are also popular with business and leisure travellers alike.

Families and individuals looking to relocate to the area are well served by numerous amenities, with many supermarkets and independent stores, as well as several specialist shops. There is also a thriving restaurant scene with many local pubs, cafes and gastropubs. Newhaven also benefits from a number of well-respected schools, both state and private, allowing for parents to choose the best option for their children's educational needs.

Conclusion:

Newhaven offers the perfect mix of location, amenities and investment possibilities. Its position on the south east coast makes it an ideal location for businesses to establish themselves, from start-ups looking to make their first investments, to large companies looking to benefit from the excellent location, transport links and potential investment opportunities.

Newhaven has certainly established itself as a town of innovation, commerce and investment and continues to draw businesses, entrepreneurs and investors alike to its fascinating port.

Thanks to its advantageous location and its available resources, it is set to continue with its vital business and trading operations, making it a prime destination for many future generations.
