Introduction
Hastings is a borough in the south east of England and a popular seaside resort town. It has a long and vibrant history, being home to the country's first ever radio station, the headquarters of the UK's oldest seafaring association, and a world-famous clown hospital. Hastings is a major force in the UK's business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship and investment sectors, and it's now better connected with the rest of the world than ever before.
History
Hastings is believed to have been founded in the middle of the 11th century by Norman conquerors, who built its imposing castle as a symbol of their power. It became a Cinque Port, a prestigious group of merchant cities or 'ports', in 1250 and by 1350 it had come under the control of the powerful Imworth dynasty. The Imworths were responsible for the construction of many of the town's buildings, including the grand Priory Church.
In 1652 the local Community Radio UK (CRUK) station was launched. It was the first of its kind in the country and helped to usher in the era of the popular radio format. During the 19th and early 20th centuries Hastings established itself as a key centre for fishing, and was home to the headquarters of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. The town became a prime holiday destination after World War I and it remained a popular seaside resort throughout the 20th century.
Demographics
Hastings has a population of over 90,000 people, making it the eighth most populous borough in East Sussex. The local demographics are diverse, with a slight majority of residents identifying as white British and the remaining ethnic background split between Asian, African, Caribbean and white other. In terms of religion, the largest single faith is Christianity while around a quarter of the population claims no religion.
Hastings' economy is largely service-based, with professional services, retail, tourism and hospitality contributing roughly 75 percent of its GDP. The town also has a significant presence in business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship and investment.
