More About Coalville

Introduction

Coalville is a large town in Leicestershire, England. It is located six miles northwest of Leicester, with a population in the 2011 census of 34,575. For many years it served as a coal mining centre, however since the closure of many mines in the area, it has become an important industrial and business hub.

Today, Coalville is a thriving commercial centre, home to a mix of technology, design, commerce and entrepreneurship. It is an attractive destination for business, technology and design organisations, with a growing network of commercial and leisure enterprises.

History

Coalville was founded in the mid-19th century, when a local entrepreneur took advantage of the area's coal reserves and opened a coal mine. The mine went on to become the largest in Leicestershire, supplying coal for generations to industries, households and the Royal Navy.

The growth of the coal mining industry resulted in an influx of people to the town, particularly with the arrival of the Midland railway in 1878, creating many new jobs and fuelling Coalville's rapid expansion.

The coal mining industry went into decline in the 1970s, with many coal mines closing. This resulted in the loss of thousands of jobs and saw a period of industrial decline, with many people leaving the area.

However, with the closure of the mines, Coalville was able to reinvent itself and focus on other industries, such as technology, design, commerce and entrepreneurship.

Demographics

Coalville has a population of 34,575, according to the 2011 census, with a median age of 38 and a population density of 3,352 people per square kilometre. Approximately 48% of the population is male, while 52% is female.

In terms of ethnicity, 92.5% of the population is white (European) and 7.5% is of an unspecified ethnic background.

Economy

Coalville remains an important industrial centre, with many engineering, technology and manufacturing businesses, including an Amazon Fulfilment Centre, retail outlets and small businesses. Many of these organisations draw on Coalville's rich history of manufacturing, engineering and coal mining.

The town is home to many technology and design-focused firms, including a range of software development companies, 3D animation studios and web design companies. In addition, Coalville is also a key centre for finance and investments, with a large number of investment firms and business advisors based in the town.

Coalville has a small but growing entrepreneurial culture, with a range of start-up companies based in the town, along with accelerators, incubators and shared workspaces.

In addition to tech, design and business, Coalville also has a thriving cultural and leisure scene. It is home to a range of bars, restaurants, cafes and pubs, as well as a number of entertainment venues, such as the Coalville Focus Cinema.

The town also has an arts centre, Coalville Arts Centre, which is a popular venue for live music, theatre, comedy and spoken word events.

Future Aspirations

Looking ahead, Coalville is aiming to build on its strengths and continue to grow as a technology, design, business, finance and leisure hub.

The town is actively seeking to attract new businesses and entrepreneurs, while at the same time nurturing small businesses and start-ups. Coalville's vision is to become a centre of innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship, with an exciting and vibrant culture.

Conclusion

Coalville has come a long way since the closure of the coal mines in the 1970s. It has been able to reinvent itself and is now a thriving town with a diverse economy focussed on technology, design, commerce, finance and leisure.

The town is actively seeking to attract more businesses and investors, and to build on its reputation as a centre of innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship.

Coalville is an exciting and vibrant place to live and do business, and is sure to continue to grow and thrive in the coming years.
