More About Amlwch

Introduction

Amlwch is a small town in North Wales located on the Isle of Anglesey. This coastal community has experienced a prosperous past, with the once-vibrant industrial port of the nineteenth century being the busiest in the country during the Industrial Revolution. It was home to the world's first commercial copper mine and from the mid-eighteenth century to the mid-nineteenth century its prosperity was largely driven by the export of copper profited from the success of the enterprises of Thomas Williams.

Backed by the resources of copper and slate, the town enjoyed a period of great prosperity and went through a period of resurgence in its manufacturing bases and harbour throughout the early twentieth century, however the decline of mining and the rise of oil in the shipping industry led to the decline of Amlwch's maritime trade and the town once again experienced considerable economic stagnation.

The modern-day economy of Amlwch is now focused on service, hospitality and retail businesses. The town also now receives capital investments from a number of local and international entities, as there is an increasing trend towards businesses setting up shop in the region, focusing on technology and design.

Demographic

Amlwch is small and has a population of around 2,000 people. This is a significant decrease since Victorian times and reflects the decline of Amlwch's industrial base. The town is populated largely by a mix of English, Welsh and Irish people, as well as families with foreign descent.

As with many towns in rural Wales, the primary demographic in Amlwch is elderly people. With a median age of 65.6, the majority of the population (80%) is aged 45 and above, although there is a small percentage of the younger population (20%) below the age of 45.

The gender ratio of the town is nearly even, with 48% male and a fraction-less-than-50% female (49.9%).

Business

Amlwch sees a concentration of service businesses and other small businesses, to a lesser extend. There are two large, iconic stores, two small independent stores, a post office and several small cafes. Business in the town, while being diverse and localised, is not particularly advanced, with most of the technology and design being provided by outside companies, who are slowly investing in the area.

Technology and Design

Amlwch has received an influx of investments recently, largely due to the widening of the Anglesey Coastal Path. In particular, technology and design have been gaining traction in the area due to this recent development. Many businesses are now looking to use the town's natural environment as a way of promoting sustainable practices and modernising their structure. Companies such as ABC Designs and Web apps have set up shop in the area, allowing for local businesses to take advantage of their services and modernise their operations.

Commerce and Entrepreneurship

As a result of the presence of technology and design, commerce and entrepreneurship are becoming increasingly prominent in Amlwch. The presence of entrepreneurs in the area has allowed for the growth of numerous start-ups, such as Greenhill Technologies, and other small businesses. These start-ups have been driven by the need to capture the large number of tourists visiting the area and provide them with locally designed and produced products, whether it is tours, hospitality or retail.

The town also boasts a few larger businesses, such as the Anglesey Fish Company, which have been a major contributor to the local economy, especially with regards to its trade with Ireland. These larger companies have allowed for the growth of other businesses, such as Lobster IT, which provides IT services in order to assist with the growth of smaller businesses.

Investment

With the recent influx of investment into the town, Amlwch has also attracted considerable investment from external sources. In particular, ConocoPhillips has invested heavily in the area, taking advantage of the town's unique location, its abundant natural resources and its well-established trade links with Ireland. Other large corporations, such as the Microsoft Corporation, have also invested in the area, providing investment capital to businesses operating in or intending to relocate to the town. The presence of such corporations has allowed for the growth of businesses in the area, not only making them more competitive but also allowing them to take advantage of the resources and expertise that these external investors can provide.

Conclusion

Amlwch is a town that has gone through numerous periods of prosperity and decline, but recent investments have rekindled the town's relationship with business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship, and investment. The influx of outside investment has encouraged local businesses to expand their operations and the local workforce to receive training and capital investments from abroad. The growth of these external investments is likely to lead to greater local prosperity in Amlwch and highlights the importance of making the most of the town's unique location, natural resources and established trade links with Ireland.
