Introduction
Wisbech is a small market town located in Cambridgeshire, England. In the mid-19th century, it was internationally famous as the centre of the British fenland horticulture industry, and the export of vegetables, fruit and flowers. Today, Wisbech still stands as a vibrant and diverse town, with a large and varied economy, which has remained largely unchanged throughout the decades. In recent years, the town has experienced a Renaissance of sorts, with renewed interest in commerce, business, technology, design, entrepreneurship and investment.
History
Since its earliest incarnation as a medieval village in 1086, Wisbech has had a rich and varied history. The town dates back to before the Norman Invasion and was once one of the busiest ports in England. It played an important role in the historic English wool trade in the medieval era, as well as for grain exports in the 18th century. In the 19th century, Wisbech emerged as the centre of a major horticulture industry, which saw the export of vegetables, fruit and flowers to London and major European cities such as Paris and Amsterdam.
Wisbech continued to grow and prosper throughout the 20th century as a major industrial centre. Home to a wide variety of industries, ranging from sugar refining and boat building, to textiles and engineering, the town experienced a period of economic stability and growth that lasted until the early 1980s. The economic decline of the 1980s saw Wisbech become one of the most deprived areas of Cambridgeshire, with levels of unemployment reaching among the highest in the country.
Demographics
Although Wisbech remains one of the most deprived areas of Cambridgeshire, it has seen an increase in population in recent years. According to the 2011 census, the population of Wisbech stood at 17, 766. Almost half (44%) of the population were of a white brunette ethnicity, with 28% being of an Asian ethnicity, 14% being of a black ethnic background and 10% identifying as mixed race.
This population of Wisbech is a very young one, with the median age being 32. This trend is likely to continue, due to the falling number of births each year (2910 in 2019). The proportion of people aged 16 or over claiming out of work benefits has decreased from 27% in 2004 to 13.6% in 2016. This is lower than the national average of 16.5%.
Business, Technology, Design and Commerce
In recent years, Wisbech has seen a surge in businesses, technology, design and commerce expertise, which have helped boost the local economy. Some of the more prominent businesses are Centurion Power Solutions, a renewable energy company; Wisbech Investment Consultants, providing financial advice; Wisbech Arts Centre, offering contemporary arts programmes; and Wisbech Design Group, providing graphics, branding, web and app design.
The Wisbech Technology Park hosts a range of technology and engineering firms, as well as providing low-cost office space for businesses. The park also has a dedicated start-up centre, offering businesses with entrepreneurial ideas access to seed capital and expert advice.
Wisbech is also home to two major shopping centres, the Wisbech Shopping Centre and the Wisbech Shopping Park. Both of these retail areas offer a variety of shops from leading high-street brands to independent stores, selling clothes, gifts, food, homeware and electronics.
Entrepreneurship and Investment
The town is home to a number of organisations offering support to aspiring entrepreneurs, including the Wisbech Enterprise Hub and the Larkfleet Group. The Enterprise Hub helps budding entrepreneurs launch their own businesses, while the Larkfleet Group provides business mentoring and access to funding.
Wisbech also hosts a variety of investment opportunities. This includes the Wisbech Angels, a local business angel investor network, and the Fenland Investment Forum, which connects business owners with potential investors.
Conclusion
Wisbech has experienced a period of economic renewal in recent times, which has seen the town progress from a largely industrial, depressed area to a vibrant, diverse centre with a wide range of business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship and investment opportunities. With a booming and youthful population and a variety of start-up schemes and funding opportunities, Wisbech is set to flourish in the years to come as a hub of creativity and innovation.
