More About Seven Sisters

Seven Sisters - Seven Sisters may refer to:

Seven Sisters oil companies - Seven Sisters was a common term for the seven transnational oil companies of the Consortium for Iran oligopoly or cartel, which dominated the global petroleum industry from the mid-1940s to the mid-1970s. Alluding to the seven mythological Pleiades sisters fathered by the titan Atlas, the business usage was popularized in the 1950s by businessman Enrico Mattei, then-head of the Italian state oil company Eni. The industry group consisted of:%0AAnglo-Iranian Oil Company originally Anglo-Persian now BP %0ARoyal Dutch Shell%0AStandard Oil Company of California SoCal, later Chevron %0AGulf Oil now merged into Chevron %0ATexaco now merged into Chevron %0AStandard Oil Company of New Jersey Esso, later Exxon, now part of ExxonMobil %0AStandard Oil Company of New York Socony, later Mobil, now part of ExxonMobil Preceding the 1973 oil crisis, the Seven Sisters controlled around 85 per cent of the world s petroleum reserves. Since then, industry dominance has shifted to the OPEC cartel and state-owned oil and gas companies in emerging-market economies, such as Saudi Aramco, Gazprom Russia , China National Petroleum Corporation, National Iranian Oil Company, PDVSA Venezuela , Petrobras Brazil , and Petronas Malaysia . In 2007, the Financial Times called these the new Seven Sisters .According to consulting firm PFC Energy, by 2012 only 7%25 of the world s known oil reserves were in countries that allowed private international companies free rein. Fully 65%25 were in the hands of state-owned companies.

Seven Sisters, Sussex - The Seven Sisters are a series of chalk cliffs by the English Channel. They form part of the South Downs in East Sussex, between the towns of Seaford and Eastbourne in southern England. They are within the South Downs National Park which is bounded by the coast, the Cuckmere and the A259 road. They are the remnants of dry valleys in the chalk South Downs, which are gradually being eroded by the sea.

Pleiades - The Pleiades , , also known as the Seven Sisters and Messier 45, are an open star cluster containing middle-aged, hot B-type stars in the north-west of the constellation Taurus. It is among the star clusters nearest to Earth, it is the nearest Messier object to Earth, and is the cluster most obvious to the naked eye in the night sky.%0AThe cluster is dominated by hot blue and luminous stars that have formed within the last 100 million years. Reflection nebulae around the brightest stars were once thought to be left over material from the formation of the cluster, but are now considered likely to be an unrelated dust cloud in the interstellar medium through which the stars are currently passing.Computer simulations have shown that the Pleiades were probably formed from a compact configuration that resembled the Orion Nebula. Astronomers estimate that the cluster will survive for about another 250 million years, after which it will disperse due to gravitational interactions with its galactic neighborhood.Together with the open star cluster of the Hyades the Pleiades form the Golden Gate of the Ecliptic.

Seven Sisters colleges - The Seven Sisters are seven highly selective liberal arts colleges in the Northeastern United States that are historically women s colleges. While two of its members Radcliffe College and Vassar College no longer operate all-female undergraduate programs, the remaining five Barnard College, Bryn Mawr College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, and Wellesley College continue to do so.%0AThey were originally created to provide women with education equivalent to the men-only Ivy League colleges, and many are affiliated with or have been absorbed by these schools. Radcliffe College shared a common and overlapping history with Harvard College from the time it was founded as the Harvard Annex in 1879. Harvard and Radcliffe effectively merged in 1977, but Radcliffe continued to be the sponsoring college for women at Harvard until its dissolution in 1999. Vassar College is historically affiliated with Yale University, who at one point suggested a merger Vassar ultimately became co-educational in 1969 and remains independent. Barnard College was Columbia University s women s liberal arts undergraduate college until its all-male coordinate school Columbia College went co-ed in 1983 to this day, Barnard continues to be a women s undergraduate college affiliated with but still legally separate from Columbia, and students receive a diploma signed by the presidents of both schools. Bryn Mawr College is affiliated with the nearby University of Pennsylvania through its membership in the Quaker Consortium, allowing Bryn Mawr students as well as other Tri-College Consortium students to attend classes at Penn and vice versa.%0AAll seven schools were founded between 1837 and 1889. Four are in Massachusetts, two are in New York, and one is in Pennsylvania.
