Rugeley - Rugeley ROOJ-lee is an industrial and market town within Cannock Chase District in Staffordshire, England.%0AIt lies on the north-eastern edge of Cannock Chase better known to the locals as The Chase next to the River Trent. It lies 7.9 miles 12.7 km north of the city of Lichfield and 9.8 miles 15.8 km southeast of the county town of Stafford, as well as 4.6 miles 7.4 km northeast of Hednesford town and 11.3 miles 18.2 km southwest of the town of Uttoxeter. At the 2001 census the town s population was 22,724, increasing to 24,033 at the 2011 Census. Rugeley is twinned with Western Springs, Illinois and in July 1962 the towns made telephone history on national television when the chairman of Rugeley Urban District Council made the first telephone call via the new Telstar satellite to the Mayor of Western Springs.
Chase Line - The Chase Line is a suburban railway line in the West Midlands region of England. It runs from its southern terminus, Birmingham New Street, to Walsall, and then Rugeley in Staffordshire, where it joins the Trent Valley Line. The name of the line refers to Cannock Chase which it runs through at its northern end.%0APart of the line, between Birmingham and Walsall, has been electrified since the 1960s work to electrify the remaining 15 mile stretch of line between Walsall and Rugeley, was completed in December 2018.
Armitage - Armitage is a village in Staffordshire, England on the south side of the Trent and Mersey Canal south just outside of the market town of Rugeley and north of the city of Lichfield. With the adjacent village of Handsacre, it forms the parish of Armitage with Handsacre. The area of Armitage with Handsacre had a population of 5,335 at the 2011 Census. With growth expected to rise further in the area, at the next census this is expected to be even higher.
Rugeley power stations - The Rugeley power stations were a series of two coal-fired power stations located on the River Trent at Rugeley in Staffordshire. The first power station on the site, Rugeley A power station was opened in 1961, but has since been closed and demolished. Rugeley B power station was commissioned in 1970 and closed on 8 June 2016. It had an output of 1,000 megawatts MW and had a 400 kilovolt kV connection to the national grid. The B station provided enough electricity to power roughly half a million homes.
William Palmer murderer - William Palmer 6 August 1824 %E2%80%93 14 June 1856 , also known as the Rugeley Poisoner or the Prince of Poisoners, was an English doctor found guilty of murder in one of the most notorious cases of the 19th century. Charles Dickens called Palmer the greatest villain that ever stood in the Old Bailey .Palmer was convicted for the 1855 murder of his friend John Cook, and was executed in public by hanging the following year. He had poisoned Cook with strychnine, and was suspected of poisoning several other people including his brother and his mother-in-law, as well as four of his children who died of convulsions before their first birthdays. Palmer made large sums of money from the deaths of his wife and brother after collecting on life insurance, and by defrauding his wealthy mother out of thousands of pounds, all of which he lost through gambling on horses.
