More About Rowlands Gill

Rowlands Gill - A Storied Community With Rich Connections To Business, Technology, Design, Commerce, Entrepreneurship and Investment

Rowlands Gill, a small but vibrant village in the Gateshead borough of Tyne and Wear, England, often flies under the radar in conversations about business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship and investment. But while this remote and picturesque location may not appear to be an obvious contender in the same league as larger cities, its close connections to some historically important organisations and industries make it an ideal place to explore these themes.

Rowland Gill is a small village and civil parish of just over 3,000 people located in the Derwent Valley, only 6 miles from the city of Newcastle upon Tyne. Located in the centre of the village is Church Bank and the Grade II listed St. Bede's church. The church dates back to the Norman era and is the spiritual heart of the village.

Historically speaking, the industry that most influentially shaped and defined the village for centuries was coal mining. Evidence has been found of coal mining in the Rowlands Gill area dating as far back as 1501. With coal being in such abundance, it attracted miners from all around the country and many still living in the village today are descended from these families. The colliery located in Rowlands Gill provided coal to the neighbouring communities, charities and even the shipbuilding industry in the 19th century. Coal mining played an active role in the village's economy until its closure in 1968.

The end of the coal mining industry saw a shift in the area's economy to focus more on industrial design and technology. The nearby Whickham Works and Vickers Armstrong factories provided employment for many in Rowlands Gill and further afield as employees were typically recruited from surrounding regions. The Tyne and Wear Development Corporation helped transform the verdant, rural landscape of the village into a vibrant working community.

Today, Rowlands Gill is an ideal location for business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship and investment. Despite its small population size, it offers excellent access to new ideas, diverse industry leaders and experienced entrepreneurs.

One of the key features of the village is the Derwent Valley Railway which was constructed by the London and North Eastern Railway for transporting coal from nearby collieries. The railway was closed in 1961 and is now part of a graded footpath running from derwent Valley to Newcastle.

The modern village centre has been successfully redeveloped in recent years and now contains a variety of shops and services meeting the needs of local people. The growth of online shopping has lead to the shifting of focus away from retail and more towards professional services and recreational opportunities. As such, the village has seen a host of new businesses moving in, such as the Wild Hearts Cafe and Bar, a flower shop and catering company and the Rowlands Gill Open Air Theatre.

In terms of educational institutions, Rowlands Gill contains two primary school, Blaydon and Sacred Heart, as well as one Catholic secondary school, St. Patrick's College. There is also an FE College in the area, Gateshead College, which offers students an array of further and higher education courses.

Overall, the village has a diverse demographic comprising those who came originally for the coal mining industry, newcomers from other parts of the UK and Europe, and a small but growing population of professionals, entrepreneurs and investors. The average age in the village is 35, with the average household income is £21,326.

Thanks to its excellent transport links, including rail, tube and bus routes, Rowlands Gill is now widely recognised as an up and coming destination for business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship and investment. With a rich history and idyllic surroundings, it is an ideal location for those looking to start or grow businesses or those in search of investment opportunities.
