Introduction
The city of Nottingham is located in the East Midlands of England, not too far from the hustle and bustle of some of the UK's other larger cities such as London, Birmingham and Manchester. Nottingham is home to around 318,000 people and is well known for its strong links to business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship and investment.
The city itself has a rich and diverse history, with the earliest evidence of settlement dating back to the Iron Age. It has held an important economic role in England since the Middle Ages, when it was part of the cloth-weaving and hosiery industry and the production of hunting equipment and firearms were an important part of its economy. The industrial revolution revitalised the city's manufacturing and engineering industries, with further expansion during the late Victorian era.
Today, Nottingham is a vibrant, diverse and creative city, with a population of 318,400 people, comprising 43.1% white British, 16.5% Asian, 10.5% black, 8.6% mixed heritage, 6.3% other white, 3.2% Chinese and 1.8% 'other'. It is also home to a large student population of around 60,000 and is also served by two universities, the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University, which together have campuses covering more than 100 acres.
Business and Investment
Nottingham is home to a large number of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). These SMEs account for the vast majority of Nottingham employment, with a wide range of sectors represented, from business and technology to design, commerce and manufacturing.
The city also plays host to a number of international companies, including global automotive giants Volvo, JCB and Experian. In fact, four of the largest UK-based Universities outside of London are located in Nottingham: The University of Nottingham, Nottingham Trent University, Loughborough University and De Montfort University.
Nottingham is also increasingly seen as a hub for enterprise, innovation and venture capital. In recent years, a number of venture capital funds have been founded in the city, including Nottingham Venture Capital Fund, which was established in 2009 and was the first of its kind to be dedicated to the city. With the support of this fund, and the backing of other investors, startups and entrepreneurs are able to access much-needed capital and resources to kick-start their businesses.
Other initiatives such as the Growth Hub, released in 2020, are helping to nurture, cultivate and grow the city's entrepreneurial space. By connecting new businesses with established ones and providing access to resources and mentoring, the Growth Hub has become an invaluable resource to Nottingham and its entrepreneurs.
Technology, Design and Commerce
Nottingham is also quickly becoming known as a leading centre for technology, design and commerce. The city's two universities, The University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University, have seen huge investment in recent years, including a £50 million investment from Investing in Engineering Excellence (IEE) and the Creative Innovation Hub -- a creative space for startups and entrepreneurs.
Nottingham has also become a leader in 'smart cities' — a concept that uses digital technology to improve city life. This is evidenced by the £3.7 million voted to it in the June 2019 Smart City Challenge, which is being used to create a new 'digital street' — a tool for the efficient delivery of public services, the smart storage and use of energy, and safer and smarter transport.
This investment is also being used to develop a range of exciting new apps, including a 'Smart City Sensor' (which allows citizens to report issues such as street obstructions or faulty street lighting and play an active role in the upkeep of their local area) and a 'Smart Parking App', which allows drivers to easily find a safe place to park their cars.
Conclusion
The city of Nottingham is a thriving destination for business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship and investment. Its history as an important economic and industrial centre has played a large part in shaping the modern city, and its links to both University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University have seen it become a hub for enterprise, innovation and venture capital.
In addition to this, the city has also become increasingly known for its establishment of 'smart cities' initiatives, which will hopefully revolutionise the way services are delivered in the city and beyond. It is clear that Nottingham is well placed to continue to develop and thrive in the future, as a beacon of technological advancement, business and creativity.
