More About Juniper Green

Juniper Green - Juniper Green is a village on the outskirts of Edinburgh, Scotland, situated about 5.5 miles 8.9 km south-west of the city centre. It bridges the city bypass, and extends along the foothills of the Pentlands. It is bordered by Colinton to the east and Currie to the south-west. It centres on Lanark Road, the main road leading out south-west of Edinburgh into the Central Borders. The village stands on an elevated ridge above the Water of Leith to its south.%0AAdministratively, Juniper Green falls within the jurisdiction of the City of Edinburgh Council having been officially absorbed into the city in 1920.

Juniper given name - The given name Juniper is either in reference to the English common name for the juniper tree or berry, or in reference to a derivation of the Welsh name Guinevere. Juniper has historically been used as both a boys name and a girls name.%0AIn 2011, Juniper entered the top 1000 list of given names in the United States for the first time and is quickly becoming a popular girls name likely due to the popularity of a wide assortment of well-known fictional works, including the cartoon series The Life and Times of Juniper Lee, the movie Benny and Joon where the Joon character was short for Juniper , Pamela Dean s novel Juniper, Gentian, and Rosemary, and the Donovan song, Jennifer Juniper .%0AThe Juniper tree s name is derived from the Latin word juniperus. In Latin, juniperus is combination of the word junio, which means young, and parere, to produce, hence youth producing, or evergreen. Ginepro Italian for Juniper , Ginevra Italian variant form of Juniper , and Ginny are other names that also refer to the Juniper tree.%0AJuniper is used to flavour the alcoholic spirit gin. The traditional drink jenever and its French name geni%C3%A8vre are names for juniper. The French name was shortened to geneva, sounding the same as the place name, and further abbreviated to gin .%0AIn some French dialects, the plant is known as genevi%C3%A8ve.

Juniper Green railway station - Juniper Green railway station was opened in 1874 and served the area of the then village of Juniper Green that now forms part of the city of Edinburgh. Although primarily built as a goods line to serve the many mills on the Water of Leith, a passenger service was provided by the Caledonian Railway using the Balerno Loop and after grouping by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, seeing formal closure to passenger traffic shortly after nationalisation. The station lay in rural surroundings despite being only a short distance from the centre of Edinburgh and had been popular with families having a day out in the country.

Juniper - Junipers are coniferous trees and shrubs in the genus Juniperus of the cypress family Cupressaceae. Depending on taxonomic viewpoint, between 50 and 67 species of junipers are widely distributed throughout the Northern Hemisphere, from the Arctic, south to tropical Africa, from Ziarat, Pakistan, east to eastern Tibet in the Old World, and in the mountains of Central America. The highest-known juniper forest occurs at an altitude of 16,000 ft 4,900 m in southeastern Tibet and the northern Himalayas, creating one of the highest tree-lines on earth.

Juniper berry - A juniper berry is the female seed cone produced by the various species of junipers. It is not a true berry but a cone with unusually fleshy and merged scales, which gives it a berry-like appearance. The cones from a handful of species, especially Juniperus communis, are used as a spice, particularly in European cuisine, and also give gin its distinctive flavour. Juniper berries may be the only spice derived from conifers.
