More About Hatfield

Introduction to Hatfield

Hatfield is a town and civil parish located in the county of Hertfordshire in the East of England. The town stands just 17 miles to the north of central London, making it a desirable residential and business location, including in the fields of business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship and investment.

The town offers an ideal balance of seclusion and settlement in equal parts; the area is in close proximity to the motorway system and mainline railway line that serve London. With a population of just under 30,000, the town has become a destination for added investment, particularly from the business, technology, design and commerce sector, with Hatfield being home to key office and business parks and also the University of Hertfordshire.

History of Hatfield

The town dates back to the 11th century, when it was part of the parish of St Etheldreda. By the 16th century, Hatfield was an established centre for the brewing industry. The industry had a major impact on employment rates at the time and the area was particularly noted for its range of Hatfield Ale.

In the 20th century, the area began the process of re-inventing itself as it embraced modernisation, education and industry in equal measure with the town becoming a designated growth point. In 1958, the De Havilland Aircraft Company became a major feature of the town as its research and development facility was situated here. This continued until 1982 when the site was sold to British Aerospace, while the housing which had originally been built in the area to house the workers was sold off by the Ministry of Defence.

The site is now home to a number of tenants, including Marks and Spencer, whose distribution centre is the largest in southern England, as well as Deloitte, Accenture and St. James's Place. The large population of students from the nearby University of Hertfordshire also adds to the local economy.

Current demographic trends

According to the estimates from the last census, Hatfield is home to a population of just under 30,000 people. Approximately half of its inhabitants are UK Nationals, although the remaining population is largely made up of EU nationals from Poland, Italy and Ireland.

In terms of ethnicity, the area is largely white British, with a large minority of black, Asian and mixed race ethnic backgrounds. With regards to religious options, Christianity is the largest religion in Hatfield, with the Church of England being the single largest denomination. There are also large populations of Islamic, Catholic, Hindu and Sikh faiths, respectively.

Income levels are significantly below the UK average, with median incomes coming in at £20,881. This is understandable given that rents are significantly lower than in neighbouring counties. However, the area remains an attractive option for small businesses and entrepreneurs. Despite this, unemployment levels in Hatfield remain contrasting the national trend, with current estimated figures putting the unemployment rate at 4.3%, significantly below the UK average of 5%.

Business in Hatfield

As previously mentioned, Hatfield is home to a number of major firms whose base of operations is mostly found in the large business parks in the area. Aviation remains a strong feature in the area, with British Aerospace and GKN operating from Hatfield.

Businesses of all sizes are encouraged in the area, with a range of offices and workshop facilities available for rent. The area is known for its commerce offering, with centres such as the Hatfield Business Park, Hatfield Garden Centre and the Galleria Shopping and Business Centre offering a range of facilities for entrepreneurs.

The University of Hertfordshire meanwhile is one of the biggest employers in the area, with the institution employing over 6,000 staff and boasting a strong industrial network. This network exists to support the university's partnerships with local employers and makes it a great resource for those looking to enter the business world or to relocate in the area.

Technology, Design and Entrepreneurship

Thanks to the presence of major companies in the area, the local economy in Hatfield benefits from a major technology, design and entrepreneurship drive. For example, the Aerospace Technology Park (ATP) based in Hatfield houses some of the country's most advanced technology companies who, in turn, tend to attract more entrepreneurs and start-ups.

Furthermore, Hatfield also benefits from its own incubator in the form of the University of Hertfordshire's Centre for Enterprise and Entrepreneurship, which focuses on helping new ventures get started. This is achieved by offering mentoring and workshops, as well as connecting entrepreneurs with local investors.

There is also a number of design and manufacturing companies situated in the area, such as Cineworld Design and Build, who produce customised exercise equipment, and Vector Ship Design, who create and design marine and boating products.

Investment Opportunities

Hatfield is an attractive option for investors, particularly those looking to back new and innovative ventures, with the area boasting a number of public and private sector funds, including Hatfield Borough Council's Energy Efficiency Funds and the Hertfordshire Life Sciences Fund, which is managed by the Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership.

The town also benefits from the Enterprise Zone located in the Hatfield Aerodrome, which benefits from significant tax incentives for businesses operating in and around the area. Additionally, the Hatfield Business and Technology Centre is home to a number of small businesses, offering a great opportunity to invest in established companies or to invest in start-ups.

Conclusion

The town of Hatfield has long been a player within the East of England, and has continually sought to modernise and adapt to the needs of the times. As it stands, the area is an attractive option for businesses, technology companies, designers, entrepreneurs and investors seeking a reliable base of operations on the outskirts of London. With a strong network of universities, talent and financial incentives, businesses seeking an affordable base within easy reach of the capital should look no further than Hatfield.
