More About Doncaster

Doncaster is a medium sized town located in the Northern region of England. It is situated on the River Don, about eighteen miles from the city of Sheffield. With a population of 333,399 (as of 2021), it is the largest town in the county of South Yorkshire.

At the centre of the town is Doncaster Market, one of the oldest markets in England, and a local point of pride since the early 1600s. Other local attractions include Doncaster Racecourse, a Grade One National Hunt racecourse; Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery, which houses extensive collections of natural history and contemporary art; and the Doncaster Dome, an entertainment and leisure complex with a swimming pool and ice rink.

Doncaster is home to a variety of businesses. The town has traditionally been a centre for manufacturing, including engineering, textiles, and coal mining. In recent years, the local economy has shifted towards services and technology.

In 2018, Doncaster was granted City of Design status by UNESCO, making it the third UK World City of Design alongside Dundee, and Wakefield. This has opened up many opportunities for collaboration with international partners and the UK's creative industries. From small businesses and start-ups to larger enterprises, Doncaster is an ideal place for commerce, technology, and design.

The region has also received investment from the UK Government's 'Northern Powerhouse' initiative, which is designed to promote economic growth and job opportunities in the North of England. A number of local projects are underway, such as the Doncaster Smart Mobility Hub, an area designed to promote the development and adoption of smart transport technologies.

Doncaster has invested in both people and facilities, creating an environment that is conducive to entrepreneurial activities. This includes the opening of the National College for High Speed Rail campus, which is set to create over 2000 skilled jobs. In addition, the University of Sheffield Doncaster Campus is focusing on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics)-related research, offering a range of degree presenters in this field. The Digital Innovation Network is a regional initiative which focuses on driving further digital technology innovation and partnerships in Doncaster, while the Yorkshire and Humber Freedom Fund aims to stimulate investment in the town.

Aside from business and investment opportunities, Doncaster has a diverse and vibrant culture. The town is known as 'the home of the festival', with a packed yearly calendar of events including the UK Share Doncaster Food and Drink Festival, the Bawtry Soul Festival and classics such as Donny in the Park and Doncaster Knights Carnival. The town also has a wide selection of green spaces, local attractions and its culturally significant racecourse.

Doncaster's central location makes it an ideal base for people living and working in the region. Commuting times to other major towns and cities in Yorkshire, such as Leeds and Sheffield, are manageable, while the area is also well served by two airports and access to national motorways and rail links.

Demographically, Doncaster's population is relatively youthful; over 28% of people are under the age of 20. A significant proportion of the population is also Asian (12.7%), and 27.3% hail from other backgrounds. The mean income sits at £23,121, slightly lower than the national average, while the town ranks in the top 10% of most deprived areas in the country. Despite the high level of deprivation, this is decreasing over time, with local capital investment and programmes of support helping to address these issues.

In summary, Doncaster is a vibrant town with a rich history, diverse culture and plenty of investment opportunities. With its City of Design status and broad range of businesses, it is a great place to call home or start a business. The town also benefits from its strategic location and good transportation links, making it ideal for both long-term and short-term stays.
