Introduction

Crickhowell is a small market town located in the Welsh county of Powys. It lies between the Brecon Beacons National Park to the west and the Brecon Beacons mountain range to the east, providing a magnificent backdrop to the town. The historic old town is home to some of the towns most noteworthy buildings, including the 13th century church of St. Edmund and the medieval bridge spanning the River Usk. The town also possesses a number of interesting independent businesses and craft shops; and is gaining a reputation as a centre for business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship and investment.

History

The town's history can be traced back to the 11th century when it was mentioned in the Welsh Chronicle. At the time, Crickhowell was controlled by the lords of Ewyas Lacy, a powerful Norman family based in nearby Ewyas Harold. The town later fell under the control of the Braose family and by the end of the 13th century, the Braose family's wealth had enabled them to construct a castle here.

By the 16th century, the town had become a centre for the leather trade, with leather being exported as far away as Italy. In the 19th century, Crickhowell became a centre for the iron and coal industry. The iron industry declined in the mid 19th century and the coal industry in the 20th century, leaving behind a number of ore works and coal mines.

In 1810, the Brecon and Abergavenny Canal was opened, linking the industrial towns of Brecon and Abergavenny. This provided a means of transport for goods between the towns, allowing them to be traded more easily, and helping to establish Crickhowell as an important market town.
