More About Banwell

Banwell is a village in the English county of Somerset situated some 4.9 miles east of Weston-super-Mare, an important regional centre of population. Set on a hill overlooking the valley of the River Axe and the nearby Mendip Hills, it is a thriving parish with a population of around 3,000 inhabitants living in a picturesque rural landscape.

Banwell sits within the Mendip district council area, part of the North Somerset unitary local authority. A Bavarian imperial family name has been associated with it for centuries and the village is home to the Grade I listed Banwell Castle and the 13th century Banwell Church.

Banwell is home to a remarkable diversity of businesses and activities, embracing everything from agriculture, manufacturing, and engineering to technology, commerce, entertainment, and investment. The village acts as a business centre for its surrounding rural community, with much of its trade going directly to the nearby towns of Weston-super-Mare and Weston-in-Gordano.

Agriculture is still a major source of income in the local area and a range of traditional products are produced in Banwell, such as dairy and beef, cereals and veggies; orchard fruits; and even horticultural products. Small-scale farming remains the backbone of Banwell, with the majority of arable and permanent pasture fields now rented out to others.

Manufacturing is a vital part of Banwell's economy, with a good number of factories providing employment to locals. The local industries include metalwork, plastic extrusion and injection molding as well as engineering, furniture and instrument making. There's also a company which specialises in the production of highly detailed figures for hobbyists.

Technology companies are playing an increasingly important role in the Banwell economy. High-tech engineering is in demand, with radar, specialised robotics and machine control systems all in use. There are a number of computer firms in Banwell, dealt with software and hardware issues, as well as website and app development. A single 3D printing bureau is also based in the area, using advanced technology for 3D manufacturing.

Commerce has long been at the heart of Banwell, ever since the 15th century when one wool merchant set up shop in the village. The village has retained its market-town atmosphere, which includes a twice yearly fair and a weekly market in the town square. Local shoppers now have the choice of boutique and high-street stores, a good selection of pubs and eateries, as well as a weekly farmers' market.

Banwell has become well-known for its growing design industry, with an upsurge of new businesses offering everything from landscaping and building, to graphics, website and app design. The Banwell area is also home to a number of creative businesses, from music production to jewellery-making, catering and interiors.

The entrepreneurial spirit is strong in Banwell and has attracted a number of business startups. These range from small-scale services such as accountants and solicitors to B2B services such as marketing and virtual assistant services. There's also a growing number of specialist firms such as creative agencies and business advisors.

There's a lot of investment coming into Banwell from outside. A number of venture capitalists, hedge funds and angel investors have earmarked funds for start-ups and projects in the Banwell area. These have included professional services such as marketing, capital raising and brand development, while property development and rural tourism have also attracted investment.

Locals are provided with a range of job and training opportunities at Banwell Employment Hub, which helps to ensure a steady economic flow in the local area and encourage the community to think outside of the box in terms of business and career.
