Annan in the United Kingdom
Annan is a bustling market town in the county of Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland, UK. It has a population of around 12,000 and is located on the south-westernmost coast of Scotland. The town has a long history; it was founded in the late 1290s by King John Balliol and for centuries it has been a significant commercial hub for the region.
Annan is a vibrant and thriving town located in an area of outstanding natural beauty and peaceful rural surroundings. It is located on the River Annan which connects it to the Solway Firth. This area of Scotland is a major center for business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship, and investment. It is home to numerous large corporations such as Carlisle-based fashion company Burberry, electronics company Vodafone and sausage roll maker Holland's Pies.
The town of Annan is well-known for its lively and vibrant atmosphere and is home to numerous festivals and events, including the River Annan Festival which has been running since the late 19th century. The festival celebrates traditional music and crafts with events hosted by the town's thriving local community and dozens of local businesses. The town also plays host to the prestigious 'Annan International' festival, which began in 1992 and is now the oldest and largest international festival in Scotland. Moreover, the small town boasts several cultural events, such as a biennial philharmonic music showcase, art exhibitions, and a range of small-scale theatre performances.
The town is well-connected to the rest of the United Kingdom, being just thirteen miles south of the Scottish city of Carlisle. By road it is connected to the nearby towns and cities via the A75 and A76 while Annan Railway Station connects it directly to Glasgow and other nearby cities such as Edinburgh, Carlisle, and Dumfries. Annan also has its own airport, Annan Airport, which services flights within the UK and Europe.
Investment in the town of Annan has been largely successful. In particular, the area plays host to several technology companies which it is hoped will contribute to the economy of the town. In 2015, a company was granted £3.5million in investment for a solar array which is estimated to generate £1.1million in renewable energy per year. Additionally, the Annan area is also gaining a reputation for being a hub for entrepreneurs and small businesses. This trend is mainly driven by the low costs of doing business compared to the more established sectors in Scotland — Annan has achieved the lowest business taxes in Scotland.
Given Annan's rural location and its deep waterfront, businesses have sought to capitalize on the natural beauty of the area. Local tourism has boomed in recent years, bolstered by the growing numbers of international tourists in the UK and the increasing accessibility of the town via road and rail links. A number of holiday parks have been developed, including Sandyhills, a popular camping and caravan holiday destination. Likewise, the Riverside Town Centre, which opened in 2007, serves as the major shopping, entertainment and leisure park of the area.
Annan is also home to several schools, with proposals for a new secondary school due to open in 2021. The town's primary schools serve pupils up to the age of 11 while its secondary schools accept students up to the age of 18. In all Annan schools, students are taught in accordance with the Curriculum for Excellence, which aims to develop the skills, knowledge, and understanding necessary for success in life.
In terms of demographics, the Annan area is diverse but most prominently populated by white British and Scottish people. The number of Asians and other ethnic minorities living in the area is increasing, however, and has been since the early 1990s. As of 2019, according to census data, the total population of Annan is 12,444 with 48.5% of the town being male and 51.5% female. 51.9% of people living in Annan are of working age, with the average income falling below the national average.
Given its long and vibrant history, proximity to major towns and cities, and growing investment in the areas of business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship, and investment, Annan is a great place to live and work in the UK. The area has a lot to offer and is an ideal place for businesses to start and grow.
