Alfreton is an ancient and picturesque market town located in the county of Derbyshire in the United Kingdom. It is situated in the picturesque Amber Valley, approximately 10 miles northwest of Nottingham and five miles west of Chesterfield and is easily accessible by road and rail. Alfreton has a proud heritage of being at the centre of the county's industrial and agricultural production, making it a key player in the East Midlands business and technology sector.
Alfreton began life as an Anglo-Saxon settlement in the 9th Century and has a long industrial history as an important market town. The town expanded rapidly in the late 18th and 19th Centuries and became a hub for local industry. Agriculture, coal mining and foundry work were the principal activities and the size of the town's population grew steadily throughout the period. Alfreton was also well served by a number of railway lines that opened up during the 19th Century, making it a popular and convenient trading centre.
Despite its long industrial history, and the decline of traditional industry in the East Midlands, Alfreton remains a thriving market town. In recent years, the town has been recognised for its strong contribution to the local economy, particularly in terms of small businesses and entrepreneurship. This has been achieved through a robust Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) which has encouraged and supported the establishment of new businesses and job opportunities.
Today, Alfreton is a bustling commercial and business centre and the town is thriving with a variety of creative industries, technology firms, retail outlets and professional services. The town is also home to a number of creative and design businesses. Alfreton's creative hub, the Creative Foundry, has become a hub of activity with a range of start-ups, media companies and freelancers who have made the town their home.
